Jackfruit is known to grow outdoors in warmer, frost-free areas of Northland.
 
In its native Asian environment it is a large tree with fruits growing on the trunk and older branches. Jackfruit is the largest of all known fruits, reaching 90 cm in length. The pulp surrounding the seeds smells and tastes of bubble gum. Bears fruit after 3 - 8 years.
